University Studies Education, BUS/MAT 4+1 Degree Plan

This optional five-year program allows students to complete their undergraduate degree while also providing a pathway for seeking teacher certification. By the end of their fourth year, students should complete 120 credit hours (108 undergraduate + 12 graduate) and receive their BUS degree. They should complete an additional 18 graduate hours in their fifth year (including summers). After the completion of 138 hours (108 undergraduate + 30 graduate), they will be awarded the MAT degree if all other requirements are satisfied.

To enroll in graduate courses, undergraduate students must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and the written approval of the undergraduate advisor and the dean of the School of Graduate Studies. The permission form may be secured from the School of Graduate Studies. The approved form must be filed with the registrar prior to registration.

A pre-candidate who plans to follow teacher preparation programs must be admitted to the graduate school along with the MAT program. Please see the MAT information for admission requirements to the program that must also be satisfied. Pre-candidates will be required to choose a track (elementary, middle, secondary, or K-12 licensure) prior to program start.

The SAU MAT program allows for candidates to be initially licensed in any content area the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education recognizes as an initial licensure area. It is incumbent upon candidates from other states to determine the licensing requirements in their state.
