Dr. Jennifer Rowsam, Dean

The Dempsey College of Liberal and Performing Arts provides programs that promote behavioral, linguistic, and artistic understanding; critical thinking; and accurate expression, enjoyment, and skillful performance of the arts. The college contributes to the general education of all students by developing their skills in communication, broadening their understanding and appreciation of the diversity of world cultures, providing an introduction to the field of art, music and theatre, and then increasing their skills for fulfilling civic and social responsibilities in a democratic society. The college offers degree programs that provide students with the knowledge and experience in fields of specialization that will enable them to enter graduate and professional schools or to qualify for occupational and professional positions suited to their abilities. The college is served by the following departments: Art and Design; Behavioral and Social Sciences; History, Political Science, and Geography; Modern Languages; Performing Arts and Mass Communication.

Mission Statement

The Dempsey College of Liberal Performing Arts seeks to foster students’ ability to think critically, become tolerant of diversity, adhere to ethical values, communicate effectively, and become responsible citizens. In addition, the college seeks to inculcate in each student an appreciation of literature, music, theatre, and art, and to provide the campus and region with opportunities for participation in these disciplines.

Double Majors

A student may earn a double major in the Dempsey College of Liberal and Performing Arts by completing all of the requirements for any two approved majors within the same degree program (i.e., two majors under BFA, two majors under BA, two majors under BS, etc.). Courses required in both majors may be double counted (i.e., counted in both majors) as approved by the dean, but the student must complete a minimum of 15 unique hours in each major. To be considered a double major, the requirements for both majors must also be completed within the same term of graduation. At the time of application for graduation, the student should have a separate degree plan filed in the Office of the Registrar for each major. When a student earns two majors, a minor will not be required.

Assessment

The learning goals for each of the major programs and descriptions of the assessment procedures may be found in the departmental assessment reports.
