SPAN 3183 - Spanish American Literature I Prerequisites: SPAN 2043 or instructor permission. A study of representative works in prose and poetry from the pre-Colombian period through Hispanic post-modernism. Readings will include indigenous literature of the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas; the chronicles and letters of Christopher Columbus and Hernán Cortés, and works by later writers such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Ricardo Palma, José Hernández, and modernist poets José Martí, Julián del Casal, Alfonsina Storni, and Rubén Darío. Attention will be given to socio-political conditions as a major force. Same as ENGL 3183 . As needed.
