PHYS 3053 - Modern Physics This course is probably the most important physics course students will ever take. It is important because it is designed to expose students to various recent ideas that have changed our understanding of the physical world. The emphasis will be on the development of physics from the 1900s to the present day. We will closely study topics such as Einstein’s theory of special relativity, the structure of the atom, the basis of quantum theory and quantum mechanics, the Hydrogen atom, atomic and nuclear physics. If time permits, the course will also include the theory of elementary particles and some cosmology.
